About the gallery:
Chert gallery opened on September 6, 2008 with the group exhibition "The Lamb´s Mother in the Creche?".
The gallery space was once a mechanics workshop located in Berlin-Kreuzberg. It consists of a single 75 sqm room split over two levels. The renovations have deliberately left many traces of its original purpose - namely the tiles lining the walls of the upper space, and the hole in the floor, typical of many car repair garages. The unique architecture of the space makes it an ideal stage for interpretation. This aspect constitutes a key role in the intention of the gallery, as most artists are invited to realize their projects in situ.

About Chino:
The Chino space opened in December 2008 with an exhibition of fossils, made possible thanks to the help of the Natural History Museum of Berlin.
As a space physically in between two different activities, Chino guests exhibitions and projects related to the program of Chert gallery as well as presentations related to the activity of Motto Bookstore, Berlin (www.mottodistribution.com).

The gallery currently represents nine artists, coming from six different countries: Alejandro Almanza Pereda (MX), Lucy Coggle (UK), Erik van der Weijde (NL), Carla Scott Fullerton (UK), Jérémie Gindre (CH), Petrit Halilaj (KS), Hannah James (UK), Heike Kabisch (DE), Vanessa Niloufar Safavi (CH).

The exhibitions program is spacing out between the solo shows of the represented artists and special projects with other international artists and group exhibitions. During the first two years of its activities the gallery offered an intensive series of solo exhibitions and special projects by young international artists, most of them having their first solo presentation in Germany.

Together with Motto Distribution, the gallery is organizing and hosting "Unter dem Motto", a self-publishing fair taking place in September. The fair presents an eclectic overview of contemporary autonomous art publishing, from home-printed zines to publications by renowned institutions.
